A turnkey multicam iPhone stream — the OBS AirPlay setup, done right.

A handful of iPhones, one Mac, one Wi-Fi network — and a real multicamera live show: Blackmagic Camera for the image, AirPlay into OBS, and Airlive as the switcher. This is the exact shape of rig a solo operator can run for a full service, and here is how to build it today with maintained pieces.

Multicamera usually means big budgets — kilometres of cable, capture cards, a rack of gear, an SDI switcher, and a bill that lands somewhere between $25,000 and $30,000 before anyone has pressed record. That's the version that keeps a lot of good teams from ever going multicam.

There's a much smaller version that holds up on air: a few iPhones running a proper camera app, a Mac, a Wi-Fi router, and software instead of a switcher. I've built this rig and helped others run it — a recurring, multi-hour live service, several angles, one person setting it up and directing it, the whole production fitting in a backpack. This guide is that setup, start to finish.

What you're building

The shape is simple, and every piece has a job:

  1. Each iPhone shoots in Blackmagic Camera — that's where the picture stops looking like a phone.
  2. Each phone sends its screen to the Mac wirelessly over AirPlay.
  3. On the Mac, the feeds land in OBS — or, better, in Airlive Bridge, a real multiview switcher.
  4. You CUT between cameras live, and the program streams out to wherever it's going.

The mechanism that carries a phone into OBS is plain AirPlay Screen Mirroring — the same thing you use to put a phone on a TV. Everything else is about doing it cleanly, in sync, and without a technician babysitting it.

Why iPhones don't have to look like iPhones

The first thing anyone says about a phone camera is that it looks like a phone camera — crushed contrast, oversharpened, that oversaturated "screen glow." That's the stock camera app doing automatic everything. Swap it for Blackmagic Camera — a free app — and the phone stops fighting you:

You get Apple Log (BT.2020 primaries) for a flat, gradeable image, manual ISO and shutter, real white balance, and LUT monitoring so a flat log picture reads correctly on set. Load a LUT built for Apple Log and you're grading toward a look, not rescuing a JPEG. Add actual lighting — the single biggest lever on any camera, phone or not — and the result genuinely doesn't read as "iPhone." If the flat grey preview throws you, that's the point: here's why Log looks flat and why that's correct.

The secret is the operator, not the phone. On the shoots this guide is drawn from, most of the work went into lighting the room and the stage, then dialling exposure and colour by hand. The camera being a phone was almost incidental — which is the whole idea.

What you'll need

  1. A few iPhones — iPhone 11 or newer, iOS 17+. Apple Log wants a recent Pro; older phones still come in clean, just without Log.
  2. A Mac to run the show — macOS 13+, Apple Silicon.
  3. One decent Wi-Fi router. Wire the Mac to it by Ethernet — the cameras stay wireless, the Mac doesn't.
  4. OBS Studio 30+, if OBS is your destination.
  5. The Airlive stack — free. Blackmagic Camera on the phones (also free).

Step 1 — every phone into OBS, wirelessly

The community OBS AirPlay plugin that made this workflow popular is no longer maintained — it fights current OBS and macOS builds, and the original build instructions have aged out. Airlive ships a maintained Screen Mirroring plugin that does the same job: any iPhone screen — including Blackmagic Camera — arrives in OBS as a source over AirPlay.

  1. Install the Airlive Screen Mirroring plugin from the Downloads page, then relaunch OBS.
  2. In OBS: Sources → + → Airlive Screen Mirroring.
  3. On the iPhone: Control Centre → Screen Mirroring → pick this Mac.
  4. Set Blackmagic Camera to a clean, full-screen preview (hide the overlays) so only the picture comes across. Repeat for each phone.

That alone gets every phone into OBS. It's the honest floor of this setup — no capture cards, no cables to the cameras. What it doesn't give you is a multiview with tally and remote control. For that, put a switcher in front of OBS.

Step 2 — turn those sources into a real switcher

Airlive Bridge is a free Mac app that plays the role the SDI switcher plays in the expensive rig. Every phone — Airlive Camera channels and AirPlay Screen Mirroring channels alike — lands in one multiview. You cue a camera to Preview, then CUT it to Program, exactly like broadcast. Blackmagic Camera comes in as a mirrored channel and sits right next to everything else.

And Bridge still feeds OBS: its program leaves as an OBS source through the plugin, so you keep your OBS scenes, overlays and stream settings while Bridge does the multiview and switching. The full walkthrough for the Blackmagic route lives in Stream Blackmagic Camera live with Airlive Bridge.

Step 3 — dial in the image once

Set each phone the same way and the cameras match on air. A working starting point, straight off the shoots:

  1. Apple Log on, with a monitoring LUT loaded so you're judging a look, not grey.
  2. Shutter at double the frame rate (1/50 for 25p, 1/60 for 30p) for natural motion.
  3. ISO as low as the light allows — noise is the one thing a grade can't undo.
  4. White balance set by hand and locked, identical on every phone, so cuts don't shift colour.
  5. A clean, full-screen preview — no overlays in frame — so only the picture mirrors across.

Static or dynamic — the same rig, two ways

The technical assembly takes about five minutes. What actually eats time is placing and locking the cameras — and there are two ways to work.

Static

Phones on clamps and tripods, locked off. With one phone freed up for remote lens switching, four phones cover six to nine framings — wide, tight, and the switched angles — without anyone touching them mid-show. One operator directs the whole thing.

Dynamic

Hand a few phones to operators and shoot it live — movement, reframing, energy. The trade is coordination: with people moving, you want tally so each operator knows when they're on air, and a fixed latency so the cuts stay clean.

Tally and remote control — so you don't lose an angle

Mirroring a screen gets you the picture, but not a back-channel: a mirrored phone can't show a tally light or take an exposure command. That's the one gap in the AirPlay-only route. The free Airlive Camera app closes it — every channel gets green/red tally, and you adjust each camera's ISO, shutter, white balance and zoom from the Mac. That's what lets one operator turn four static phones into six-plus angles — you switch lenses remotely instead of sacrificing a camera to do it by hand.

Route the program out

Whatever is on Program leaves Bridge through every output you switch on — several at once. The phones only ever send their feed to the Mac; Bridge does the distributing.

Most people send the program to OBS for the final stream, or straight out over SRT to a platform. The per-output detail is in NDI, SRT, RTSP or HDMI out of an iPhone.

The turnkey payoff

Add it up and the whole thing is one Mac, a router, and phones you may already own. Against a traditional multicam build — $25,000-plus of cameras, cabling and a switcher — the software rig is close to free: the Airlive stack (camera app, Bridge, both OBS plugins) costs nothing, bar an optional $15 one-time unlock that removes the watermark from a live stream. Recordings are always clean.

The part that matters on the day: one person can carry it, set it up in minutes, and run it alone. The whole service really does fit in a backpack — and nothing on air announces that the cameras cost a fraction of what they replaced.

Make it reliable

  1. Give the production its own router or SSID — never share the venue's guest Wi-Fi.
  2. Wire the Mac by Ethernet; keep only the cameras on Wi-Fi.
  3. Prefer 5 GHz, and keep phones within sane range of the access point.
  4. Put every camera on the same latency preset so the multicam stays in sync — why a fixed delay beats "as fast as possible."

FAQ

Do I have to use Blackmagic Camera? No — any camera app mirrors in, and Airlive Camera comes with tally and remote control built in. Blackmagic Camera is here because it gives you Apple Log and full manual control for free, which is what makes the image hold up.

How many iPhones can I run? The ceiling is your network, not the software. A solid dedicated router handles more phones than most productions need — five or six is routine.

Can one person really run it? That's the whole point of the format. Static cameras plus remote lens switching means a single operator directs several angles without leaving the Mac.

OBS or Bridge? OBS alone works if you just need the sources. Bridge adds the multiview, Preview/Program switching, tally and remote control — and still feeds OBS, so it's not either/or.
